I was just looking at a picture of Beaky's Sasha and her box of fluffy toys and suddenly remembered a time when the dogs I had would play with them for months before shredding them. Now I've got Sef and Doris who immediately rip everything to shreds within seconds of it touching their gobs. My lovely Grace used to have favourite toys that she'd wander round with for ages  I found her favourite donkey toy where she left it, snuggled in her bed 2 months after she died (it took 2 months before I would let anyone touch her bed cos I'm sad like that  ) So is it more normal for dogs to shred them or luff them

Sasha normally shreds everything and disembowels them within minutes so the nice box of toys really are just the outer skins

But she does still love them even when they are empty shells. Her favourites have always been the Pheasants and she has many of them

Tennis balls are also her favourite but she just lays and shreds them and then haz a sad so they get saved for special play (normally when we have to distract her, usually from visitors) inside or out.

We had a :yikes: moment a few years ago when I proudly presented her with an £8 wubba...which was a goner in under 5 minutes :yikes:

You've disillusioned me now

We don't even get the skins left. And if Sef gets hold of them we find the evidence when poo picking.

All my lot have their destructive moments when they will kill, kill, kill!

But on the whole toys last quite well and we've even managed to teach the pony dog to be gentle with his toys

But I've had some foster dogs who have been complete shockers :taunt:

Molly shreds squeaky plastic toys into bits - but loves soft toys and other than a bit of surgery to remove eyes :dunno: usually leaves them intact. Since Chance moving in resulted in a few :mask: guarding issues arising toys were lifted and very gradually reintroduced starting with tough mostly rope type toys.

At Christmas my friend gave us 4 soft toys of the size Molly usually loved  and I decided to see how it went :fingers:

So far all toys are still alive (although the occasional label or eye has been removed) and guarding is occasional - who knows what will happpen when Chancey pupster is all growed up though.

Face licking - probably planning to remove eyes

Jake is a rip it up boy with anything soft and quite a lot of things that are supposed to be tough. The one thing he doesn't rip to pieces immeditely is a honking pig, the current one had it's face chewed off after about six weeks, but is still being played with. The honking hippo got it's face chewed off immediately  , was played with like that for a while then got it's bum chewed off and is now being played with outside.

Thorn is far more gentle with the soft toys, she starts off by removing any protruding bits like labels or hanging loops. Given the chance she'll go on playing with a toy like that for weeks, at some point she will decide that anything else protruding like ears or feet on a Fungus Must Go, she may extract the squeak then or leave it for later. Eventually she will de-stuff it completely then go on playing with the skin. While we had Penny we had to keep a sharp eye out for the de-stuffing phase as she would eat the stuffing followed by the skin if she got the chance  And these days we do try to make sure Thorn gets to play with a soft toy from time to time, but Jake usually gets them way before she's through with them.

My 2 either seem to keep soft squeaky toys going for a couple of months or demolish them within hours .. really depends whether they decide to play tug with them or not. The present roosters have lasted 2 months so far, which is a record :fingers:

This was the picture I posted - she is a bit in love with the bone Cloudy gave her

She has a lot of toys (as she has more in the 'dog' cupboard) But in our defense some are 9 - 10 years old. Whatever doesn't get shredded gets saved and she plays with pretty much everything from time to time.

When we adopted her she wouldn't play at all. Didn't have a clue. Now she will in the house but not when there are other dogs, unless it's a ball. I have taught her to play tuggie at agility but it has to have a ball on the end.

Louie used to shred soft toys when he was little but now he's an adult he's just not interested. He has some soft balls but he doesnt try and shred them.

I am a bad dog mummy, my dogs have a very limited range of toys, they have a Goughnut ring each, a Boomer ball and a Kong. In my defence they are Staffies and no other toys have lasted more than 2 minutes and believe me I have tried everything :( Considering there are only about 6 toys in the cupboard they cost a small fortune, oh the joy of trying to find Staffie proof entertainment.

Lottie shreds almost everything in seconds  although she does have one or two soft toys that she has had from day 1 :dunno: The only things that really survive are the latex toys like the honking pigs. Nobody else shreds toys, it's a Lottie speciality
