Anyone any experience of this? A couple of months ago I posted here that Riley lurcher had a couple of scabby patches on his lips - lower jaw, behind his canines. The vet said it looked like lip fold dermatitis, but was odd, as he has a very greyhoundy face with no real folds... His teeth are in good nick, and he had a full dental and the works when he was in rescue earlier this year. He had two weeks of cephorum antibiotics and it cleared up. It's back, same place, identical scabs so we're back on the antib's for a fortnight, followed by daily anti bacterial wipes when it's healed. Any ideas? |

Poor Riley ![]() I guess you are reckoning is will be back after this course finishes? You don't think it could be diet do you (I guess if it is so localised then it sort of rules it out)? Odd question but does he dribble in his sleep? And does he sleep on his side or do heavy nose syndrome? Could it possibly be that? I'd be tempted to dump the wipes and do a bathe with saline and maybe use a generic soothing cream with anti bac properties. Something like dermacton which I really rate Two of my skinny hounds face clean after every meal which sort of indicates to me that they feel something is stuck. I'll have a peer at them more closely after meals and see if I can spot anything. But I've no idea really so am pretty much useless!

Thanks Jo, Difficult to say with diet. Grain free salmon and potato kibble with a bit of Butchers tripe to make it interesting. There's nowhere with food stuck, and he seems to have a really healthy mouth. I agree with you about the saline, as the wipes were a second mortgage job! He's a healthy older boy - bit creaky round the hips and not keen on the cold, but ok... |

I've done staring and checking all day. The ones of mine who face rub are the ones who have had dentals when they came in. They both dribble a bit too. And Delboy has some scabby bits around his mouth (his are just inside his lips) but I am pretty sure that they are about him face rubbing and dribbling and it being learnt behaviour from when his teeth hurt. I think this is probably no help but maybe the saline trick is

peggy my cocker used to suffer from this a lot,she used to have open sores on her lips which must have really hurt, peg for a cocker isint even that jowly or dribbly, now i think the problem was internal not wet jowls because of all the things we discovered last summer at the specialist vets with her sneezing problem, anyway back then which must be 4 yrs ago now we were at the vets a lot for different meds and treatment at one point a vet even suggested a lip tuck, i didnt agree for some reason . anyway i used to clean her lips after her 2 meals and try to keep them dry during the day, she had antibs at different times when it got really bad and even had some really strong ointment whos name i cant remember now. i even had maleseb wipes, i tried a lot of different things i even tried manuka honey but for some reason it didnt get chance to work, but the thing that improved it and touch wood seems to be keeping it away was changing her food. peggy is hypersensitive to most things and at the time when she was really bad she was being fed arden grange sensitive, lovely for her belly but not her lips. i changed to wainwrights senior salmon and spud for there diets because something had changed with the arden grange food (although they wouldnt admit it) and it was upsetting her and buddys tums (bud has ibd) so i tried this one and both do really well on it and peggys lips cleared up , i was quite surprised as it had been going on for several years but so far after about 2 yrs on it touch wood no sore lips. as a food topper, appetiser i give them boiled white fish. i buy a bag of frozen pollock pieces in asdas for £4 which lasts about 2 and half weeks, so really cheap and they love the fish i usuaaly soak the kibble in hotwater too, just a quick wet then add cold and drain some off to warm up the fish if its been in the fridge, peggy loves to drink the water ive cooked the fish in as well. you say you are giving butchers if it were me id try without the tinned for a bit, maybe try fish just to see if it helps. do you soak the kibble as i think sometimes that makes it more appetising. anyway hope you clear it up i now how much poor peg went through with it so i really feel for your chap , as i say above i do think with hindsight a lot of this problem with peggy was more internal than external if you see what i mean, that may not be the case with your riley but do consider it, peggy had various skin and tummy issues for 9 yrs that were treated by the vets topically but i discovered with the speicalist that everything is connected. i dont think im explaining it very well i hope you understand what im trying to say, it might not be his lips causing his lips to be sore, does that make sense. tracey |

Not long after we adopted Boysie he developed chronic lip fold dermatitis. We were given fuciderm, AB's ,and used to bathe daily with hibiscrub, but it got so bad (and he did have deep folds), that eventually we opted for the surgery though it didn't come back as bad, he still used to look a bit sore at times. When he was later diagnosed as hypothyroid, we discovered that skin infections (and lip fold problems) can be due to that. Once on thyroid meds, he didn't have a problem again. So if you think you have diet etc sorted, it might be worth having his thyroid function checked too. |
