Morning all ( well it is here ) its just after 6 am and the local Temple has started the morning chanting so I don't need an alarm clock as they use a PA system to ensure the entire village hears !

I arrived back on Tuesday and yesterday we started our 2013 sterilisation program at our clinic , this year we are going to provide 1500 sterilisations for dogs and cats ( both owned and stray ) to run along side our education program , rehoming program & welfare checks

Blog update from day one ( with lots of photos ) is here

:waves: Hello Sam. You've timed your trip just right to avoid the snow here.

I always love seeing your photos, I especially liked seeing Lassy helping her owner this time! Sounds like you are making a good start to a some ambitious plans for this year.

Meet Nangi and Tony ( both girls )

Who are a mum and daughter that were sterilised today funded by your donation this morning

Nangi ( means Sister in Sinhala ) will never have to worry about having any further litters and her daughter Tony will never face that either , both girls were also vaccinated against Rabies which is a fatal and horrifying zoonotic disease

Lovely to read your updates.

Small donation sent :)
First your cats , cats here are normally called Puss , Kitty , Poosa ( means cat in Sinhala ) or Chutti

Yours are both Chutti's

Chutti number 1 lives at Madana Temple with Podi Sadu ( means trainee Monk ) the older Monk is very fond of animals there and they have 2 dogs ( already sterilised by us ) and Chutti

Posted Image

Chutti number 2 came in with her equally young owner , we are so pleased to see the changes in childrens attitudes regards pets locally as a result of our overall work and in school program

Posted Image

and your dogs

Sisters Patiya and Kalu ( means black in Sinhala but is a common dogs name ) and thier lovely mum

Posted Image

I used the last of your donation to buy meds for Kitty who has been admitted here following a bit from a dog , she is paralysed and we don't know if thats permanent ( takes 72 hours to tell for sure ) she also had a huge abscess which the vet drained today .

Thanks again for your donation and enjoy seeing the differance it makes

Hello Sam (and Mark!)
A great update! And thanks for the email update re the 'sponsors' we had made as gifts. Our recipients have enjoyed seeing the pics of Pinky, Whita and Chutti, and we are all in awe at the work and education that you do :flowers: The Christmas pudding was delicious too!
Is there anything else those not brave enough to travel / move across the world can do to help?

I am so pleased they like them :)

We would love more help , I do get a bit frustrated sometimes that there are not more hours in the day !

Publicity is a great thing everyone can help with ,

tell friends and co workers ( well ones that like animals )
Like share our page on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/DogstarFoundation
like and share facebook posts ( this helps a lot especially since FB started charging pages to promote posts )
follow us on twitter @dogstartweets and RT our posts
if on twitter donate a daily tweet http://justcoz.org/DogstarTweetshttp://justcoz.org/DogstarTweets

Fundraising

sometimes people get a bit worried they need to raise loads but I think the ethos of Dogstar has always been no donation is ever too small

This year we have a huge appeal ( 18 K ) to fund our sterilisation program and we need lots of people to commit to raise small sums ( £50-100 ) over the year and set up a justgiving page and link it out main appeal

https://www.justgiving.com/teams/Sirius2013

so you might raise money by a car boot sale , bake sale at work , coffee morning , asking friends to donate in lieu of a birthday etc over the year

lastly with Mark and I in Sri Lanka we will find it impossible to have stalls at summer fetes and dogshows so if anyone wanted to do that on behalf of Dogstar we could send banners , leaflets and some Sri Lanka items to sell ( Friendship bracelets and our in production dog bandannas )

We are always touched when anyone is able to help us in any way and we love to provide feedback to supporters directly so they can see where their money went

Sam :)

Love the work you do, it must take so much of your time but I do think it makes a real difference that you take the time to tell people what their donation has done. I know long term and as you achieve your goal of more support you may not be able to continue, but it is definitely something that makes you stand out from the crowd.

Me and hubby have been looking at the website trying to work out when we would be able to maybe volunteer for a couple of weeks instead of annual leave   It might be a year or two away before we can realistically coordinate it (arranging childcare etc). Is there a minimum age your volunteers need to be?

Small donation sent, sorry it can't be more but I will try and give a little per month :fingers:

Great work and wonderful feedback too. As someone else has said if you can keep people informed about where their donations are being used then you will be exceptional and I hope your charity will benefit greatly.

As a child my mother and I travelled to Australia by ship, stayed their for 6 years and then returned. We stopped at Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) on both journeys and although the visits were brief, I have never forgotten such a beautiful place so it is lovely to see your photographs of the country and the animals and people too.

I have used the easyfundraising link you sent. It won't be a lot but hopefully lots of other people will want to do this too. All good wishes for your work in your new life :goodjob:

For volunteers the minimum age is 18 but if a family with children wanted to come we would be happy to dicuss that

Thank you so much for the donation , we can vaccinate 5 dogs or cats against Rabies with that so that will be literally lifesaving
