Hooch is his microchip name, but he does not appear to answer to it in the slightest. I originally rehomed Hooch but last Saturday he turned up as a stray in City Dogs Home. As he was rehomed under District Dogs Rescue he was still registered to me so they rang me .. we gave the owner a week to claim him and sadly they haven't :(, so today i drove to the Dogs Home to collect him.

He was one of a litter of puppies (cross beagles) originally rehomed by the RSPCA in Lancashire, but for some strange reason a number of the new owners contacted me back then and we rehomed them. He doesn't answer to Hooch so I imagine the new owners changed his name so as I don't like Hooch, my challenge and yours is to find him a new name.

His body, tail and bark are every bit beagle, but his face is something else. His mum was a beagle.

He is in really good condition and although not fully trained on a lead (what beagle ever is) a canny collar has sorted that out.

Anywa here he is, do you have any suggestions for what I can call him? Phoenix Dog Rescue will take him in and rehome him now.

How old is he?

I would guess he was JRT which is a popular cross with a beagle.

I used to teach a beagle cross JRT and she was a cracking little dog.

I think he is around eight years of age, but he doesn't act it. I agree the face is definitely terrier.

Sadly he is only here till he gets over his kennel cough. I am not in a position to have another dog. Also very sadly my Harvey is very poorly right now, so if this lad didn't have KC he would not be here. I am waiting to go to the vets with Harvey .. of course knowing Harvey it could all be self inflicted emotionally as he doesn't do well with change and another dog in the house is classed as change. Trying to convince my two to go a walk with Harry is quite a task!

Harvey is now fully recovered from his bout of sickness. Harry is still here and will stay here for as long as he can. Sadly because of my brothers funeral he may need a period in kennels while I am in Scotland, but I fully intend to bring him back to me if he hasn't found a home by then. He is really the near perfect house guest and we are now all rather fond of him and his funny ways. He is due to go to kennels when I am away but a friend at work has also said that he may look after him while I am away so that might be another option.

Well Harry has returned from the Builders. He ran into my house delighted to be here again. Which is strange because once in here he doesn't listen to me in the slightest. He really is a funny little dog.

The Builders wife said she loved him, but he never did what he was told more what he wanted.

Does anyone out there have experience of beagles and would you like another one

Harry, is lovely in most ways but he has some little issues which I will post about in training and behaviour. However when he isn't exhibiting them I would say he is nearly the perfect boy

Ohhh but I can bombard you with questions and you can share your wisdom. :flowers:

First one .. do beagles ever listen.

Second one .. when we go for a walk, he is so excited he barks constantly (sounds like a dog in a pack waiting to go on the hunt). Also when he sees another dog he does the same and gets very very loud. Other dogs are a bit frightened of him. However if I walk him right up to the other dog he is happy to meet it.

When out he shows me not the slightest bit of attention. I would be terrified of letting him off lead. This is the first dog in my life that I have not felt I could let off lead (I appreciate some of his barking is frustration).

What collar is best for a small beagle head. He pulls like a train and currently has a canny collar which works, but he can when determined take it off.

Not very often.

No help I am afraid one of mine did that for all his 13 years, everybody knew that we were about.

Again Dylan was rarely off lead as he was a hunter and once on a scent nothing would distract him.

Try a Martingale.

Very sadly today Harry had to go to kennels. I have to admit that with all I have to currently fight against, I could not cope with his needs. I was heartbroken, but today he wrecked the dog crate in the car and has damaged my car. He clearly is not happy. He was left with my dogs in the car for no more than fifteen minutes while I went into a shop. We had been on a very long walk just prior to this. In many ways he is the perfect dog in the house, but out and about as I am constantly I just couldn't give him what he needed :(. My only justification is that stress is not something I need in my life right now and he was giving me it by the bucket load, and to be honest very little affection during the good moments

It is totally understandable. Having a dog who can't fit in well with 'normal life' I know just how stressful it is and you really do not need that. Harry will find the right place for himself and you will have helped him along the way, as you have done for so many thousands of other dogs.
