Apart from being incredibly handsome and laid back while in the house, poor Harry does appear to have one problem which I have personally never dealt with before so I need some advice as to where to start. But first another pic of the lovely boy, just because I can.![]() OK Harry's problem is I think related to food, and he appears to have a food allergy of some description. Basically he has running water poo's at the moment :(. He had them when he came out of the kennels, hasn't been to vets yet because of KC, but will go later, they then got a bit better but have reverted again. Other than that he is fine, not quiet or off colour the way Harvey was otherwise I would think they had shared the infection. I really do think it is probably food related. So where does one start with a dog identifying what makes him bad? How do I bung him up again? |

Usually you do an exclusion diet and then gradually add one thing in at a time to see what the culprit is. However, it can take up to 6 weeks for a foodstuff to leave the system, so can be a long old road! I'd start by eliminating the usual suspects, which are gluten, wheat, soya, beef and often chicken. Try him on a cereal free 'sensitive' food. Wainwrights (Pets at Home's premium brand) do a salmon and potato and turkey and veg variety I think. If he gets anything else in the way of treats, I'd be careful about those as well. It's possible he could have guardia or campylobacter, which would make him runny. A vet would be able to test faeces for it. Be careful though, as they can transfer across to humans. He could also just have some sort of sickness bug? Seems to be a lot of it about at the moment. Hope he is well soon

Doesn't sound quite right. What colour is it Catherine? If you reckon it is food... I'd start with exclusion. The hound people all say cooked white fish and mashed potato to start with. Nothing else (Harris survived on it for 3 months no problem). The gradually introduce other things and see what effect they have. I've found soya yogurt really good to help settle a dodgy tum and get things working again, or scrambled eggs cooked with water to help bung up. |

We have been at the vets, he is on two sets of tabs and has had a wormer. Vet wants to rule out infections before treating it as food allergy because of him coming from a pound. However I might try some things to bung him up a bit because it is really really loose

Pro-koling is good for firming things up or just kaolin powder (although Pro has prebiotics and other stuff in it). Turmeric is also good for firming up and helps soothe the gut too, it's my go-to stuff for when Raine gets sick. Could stress be a factor maybe, keeping things going on? |

I know someone recommends slippery elm for tummy upsets, it helps soothe. Bone can be quite firming to the stools - mine are raw fed so if they're a bit loose (e.g. poorly) I'll give chicken mince with bone in to help in that department. However, I'm of the mind that the body does these things for a reason - often the body wants the trigger out (food its intolerant of, bugs, etc) so I don't tend to give or take any specific remedies for an upset tum. |

With a dog recently out of the pound I would suspect giardia/campylobacter as a first off. That combined with stress can also temporarily make them more inclined to food sensitivities. If it recurs after the meds stop I would get a faecal sample into the vets. Both giardia and campy are very contagious. Hope the meds help.

Both giardia and campylobacter are surprisingly common, but they are also easy to treat. It may well be that one of the meds he's got for his poorly tum is one that treats both giardia and campylobacter (although its usually a longer course).

Already things are firming up. The vet has said to try a weeks course if it remains or returns we will to a facaes sample and treat for the unspellable Fingers crossed for Harry. I will next be moving to trainig and behaviour because he has the worst case of on lead dog reactivity i have ever dealt with. Being a beagle it sounds like hound of baskerville when he kicks off

Sef had very runny/watery poo's when I first got him. He didn't have to rush to get out or anything but they were very loose when he did go. After some checking we found he was gluten intolerant and swopping to gluten free food really helped. |
